Steam heat pumps powered by renewable energy sources for industrial applications

MAN Energy Solutions is building an industrial-scale heat pump that generates steam without the use of gas. It will produce steam at a dairy farm in New Zealand to dry dairy ingredients.
German engine and turbomachinery manufacturer MAN Energy Solutions has announced that it will begin testing the design and implementation of an industrial heat pump for steam generation.
According to MAN, the technology will be powered by renewable energy sources such as solar, hydro, geothermal and wind. It will produce steam for the New Zealand Dairy Cooperative Frontera to dry dairy ingredients.
“When integrated into the Fonterra production infrastructure, the heat pump can produce more than 30 metric tons of process steam per hour, equivalent to a heat output of 25 megawatts,” MAN said in a statement without adding further technical details. A dairy farm’s CO2 emissions can be reduced by 60,000 metric tons per year.
The first phase of the project will be an engineering study to develop ways to integrate the heat pump solution into an existing cooperative milk powder production facility. According to MAN, the study is expected to be completed by the end of April 2023. These results will then be used to design a heat pump system at one of Fonterra’s production sites.

Last year, a dairy producer announced the installation of a biomass boiler to replace a coal-fired boiler at one of its plants, which is expected to be operational by the end of November 2023. Its investment in renewable energy heat pumps is part of its commitment to go coal-free in its manufacturing operations.
